Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN)
Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) is a mobile network architecture which can aid the mobile operators to handle the growing demands of bandwidth and data rates of endusers. In C-RAN, Baseband Units (BBUs) from multiple base stations are pooled into centralized BBU Pool for statistical multiplexing gain, while shifting the burden to the high-speed wireline transmission of In-phase and Quadrature (IQ) data. Energy efficient network operation and possible cost savings on baseband resources is feasible through C-RAN. Furthermore, it performs load balancing and cooperative processing of signals originating from several base stations, thus improving the network capacity.

We study the characteristics of CRAN systems including outage probability, throughput and system capacity. Stochastic geometry (e.g. Poisson point process (PPP) and Hard core point process (HCPP)) is used to model the spatial distribution of RRHs while different RRH selection schemes (including the best RRH participate, all RRHs participate and the nearest RRH participate schemes) are adopted and compared.
